This is the first year that the Scouting Program allows the boys to learn how to use pocket knives, so our November Den Meeting was all about earning our Whittling Chip!
They finished the entire Achievement #19 (pages 146 - 151)... make sure you sign it off in their handbook!
Before we actually got started whittling we had to go over the Safety Rules... it'd probably be a good idea to continue reviewing them again at home!
The boys learned how to make a 'stop cut'.
The boys also reviewed and repeated the Pocket Knife Pledge. This allows them to now carry a pocket knife to designated Cub Scout functions.
The boys also earned the Whittling chip card. This means that the boys read, understand and promise to abide by the 'Knives Are Not Toys' guidelines and the Pocketknife Pledge.
The boys all got to choose anything they wanted to carve out of a bar of soap. We discovered that not all soap is created equal... some was softer, some was really difficult to make cuts, etc.
Luke made a hot dog in a bun!
Noah had super soft soap, so he ended up making one die and the front end of a car!
Crazy boys with their crazy creations!
Blood circle? Every adult was right on top of these boys!
