October Den Meeting

Well, our first Den meeting of the 2009-2010 school year was a success! I am so grateful to be able to lead such a great group of fun and energetic boys!

We started off the meeting by burning off a little energy with a Scout vs. Akela soccer game. We only had a couple of injuries...sorry Connor and Luke! Those dads got a little competitive! :D After twenty minutes I declared our Wolves the winners!

After the soccer match, we practiced the JC Penney skit that the boys are performing at the October Pack meeting (Thursday, the 22nd @ 7 p.m. in the Grass Lake Gym). It's the same skit that the boys performed at Day Camp in July... quite cute. Just remind the boys to speak loudly and project out toward the audience! :)
While the boys were eating their snack I read them a few facts about Bats. The main point that I wanted them to understand is that Bats 'see' by using their sense of smell and hearing. Right after I read the facts and showed them some cool pics of bats, we did a fun sensory experiment. The boys were blindfolded and they had the opportunity to smell a variety of fragrances (i.e. cinnamon, coffee, maple syrup, onions and vinegar & lime) after which they had to guess what they had smelled. The next part of the experiment was auditory. While still blindfolded they had to guess at a number of different sounds (i.e. tearing paper, popping balloon, match striking, zipper zipping, snapping a twig). The dads and I had a great time watching the boys during this experiement! I'm going to count this portion of the meeting for Elective 13 c. You can sign off your Wolf's book on pg. 175 and note that the book was called 'Bats'.
ACHIEVEMENTS:
  • We are continuing to work on #2b (pg. 48)... each of the boys will get the opportunity to lead a flag ceremony at a Den Meeting. So far Hunter, Eric and Nicholas are officially signed off on 2b, so please mark this off in your book. All other boys will get the opportunity at future meetings.
  • The final thing that we did was work on Achievment #2d (pg. 50-53)... we talked a little bit about the history of the Washington State flag. Don't forget to mark this off in your Wolf Handbook (page 53)!
  • Please work on Requirement 2c (pg. 49) at home!
  • The last achievement that we will have to work on is 2e (pg. 54). I thought I would ask one of the Grass Lake maintenance guys to let us have access to the flag pole & flag at the next meeting. Once that is done we should be done with the Achievement 2 Chapter.

More information to come out soon:

  1. not necessarily, but I think the precedent has already been set... :) It can be something super simple like gummy snacks.
